How Foreign Work Experience Can Boost Your PR Application—Even if Your Permit Has Expired or Is Expiring Soon

For many temporary residents in Canada, the path to permanent residency (PR) can feel uncertain—especially if your work or study permit has recently expired or is nearing expiration. But here’s a ray of hope: your foreign work experience, even from your home country, could be the key to unlocking your Canadian dream.

Why Foreign Work Experience Matters

Canada’s Express Entry system, which manages PR applications through programs like the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC), assigns points for both Canadian and foreign work experience. If you have at least one year of skilled work experience outside of Canada (in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation), you may already qualify under the FSWP—even if your status in Canada is uncertain.

Combining Canadian and Foreign Experience

If you’ve gained any skilled work experience in Canada on a valid permit, combining that with your foreign experience can boost your profile significantly. Applicants with both types of experience often score higher in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), increasing their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR.

Leaving Canada to Gain Foreign Experience

If your permit has expired—or will soon—and you’re unable to stay or restore your status, consider this: leaving Canada temporarily to return to your home country and gain skilled work experience could be a strategic move. Once you’ve accumulated at least one year of full-time skilled work abroad, you may become eligible to apply under the FSWP from outside Canada.

This option allows you to rebuild your profile, gain additional CRS points, and potentially return to Canada as a permanent resident.

Other Options to Consider

  • Restore your status: If you’re within 90 days of losing your status, you may be able to restore it and stay in Canada legally.
  • Open Work Permits: If you’ve applied for PR, you might qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) to continue working while your application is processed.
  • Humanitarian & Compassionate (H&C) Applications: If you have strong ties to Canada or compelling reasons to stay, H&C might be a viable pathway.

Maximize Your Chances

  • Get your credentials assessed (ECA)
  • Document your foreign work experience with reference letters, contracts, and pay slips
  • Take a language test (IELTS/CELPIP for English or TEF for French)
  • Consult with an immigration professional to build the best strategy for your situation

Final Thoughts

Your time in Canada hasn’t been wasted—even if your status is ending. With the right planning, your foreign work experience can become your greatest asset in securing permanent residency. Whether you stay and explore restoration options or return home to strengthen your profile, the journey to PR is still within reach.
