Key Changes to Canada’s PGWP Program in 2024

The 2024 changes to Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, effective November 1, introduce new eligibility requirements, focusing on language proficiency and specific fields of study.
What remains unchanged:
• Graduates must still attend a PGWP-eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
• The requirement for physical presence in Canada remains.
• Applications submitted before November 1, 2024, follow the current rules.
• Flight school graduates are exempt from the new criteria.
New rules (effective November 1, 2024):
• Language proficiency: All students must meet specific language benchmarks (CLB/NCLC 7 for university programs, CLB/NCLC 5 for college programs).
• Field of study requirements: Some programs must align with high-demand occupations, including healthcare, STEM, trades, transportation, and agriculture.
Accepted language tests include CELPIP, IELTS (General Training), and PTE Core, and the test results must be less than two years old.
International students should verify their program’s eligibility and ensure they meet the updated language and study requirements to qualify for a PGWP.
